A Sunset Wish: Compassionate Care in Action at St Vincent’s
At St Vincent’s, a simple wish became a powerful reminder of what palliative care truly means: dignity, empathy, and Care with Purpose.
During a quiet conversation with her palliative care nurse, resident Marie Belletty (Illette) shared that she longed for something she felt had slipped away: “I just want to see a sunset again.”
That heartfelt request sparked a wave of compassion. The Facility Manager approved the idea without hesitation, and the Palliative Care Nurse and Wellness team began working with staff across departments to make it happen. Together, they organised a special Sunset Wish outing. A symbolic “date night” by the ocean for Marie and her husband of over 50 years, Terrance.
For the couple, it was more than an outing. It was a return to the simple joys that had always mattered most. As Terrance shared afterwards:
“Marie was very happy with it. She was extremely happy with the experience. It was a little windy, but Marie has always loved the ocean and sunsets, so it made her day.”
This story is a reminder that palliative care is not only about managing symptoms, it’s about honouring moments, restoring dignity, and creating joy. By listening deeply and responding with compassion, the team at St Vincent’s showed how even the smallest wishes can bring meaning, connection, and comfort.
