Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Sr Mary Glowrey

On 23 June, residents and staff at our Sr Mary Glowrey Residential Aged Care home came together to celebrate the birthday of the remarkable woman after whom our facility is named.

Born in Birregurra, Victoria, in 1887, Sr Mary Glowrey was one of Australia’s first female medical graduates, a founder of the Catholic Women’s League, and the first woman in the world to serve as both a religious sister and practising doctor. In 1920, she dedicated her life to medical missionary work in India, where she championed health care for women and children. Her legacy continues today through the Catholic Health Association of India – the largest Catholic health network in the world.

Our Belmont facility, officially opened in 2023, is a tribute to her enduring spirit, delivering compassionate, community-based aged care with purpose.

The celebration featured a thoughtful presentation from Facility Manager Jo, who spoke beautifully about Sr Mary’s legacy and its continued relevance to our work. Attendees also enjoyed a fantastic afternoon tea, complete with delicious cupcakes that were a hit with everyone.

It was a joyful occasion filled with reflection, connection, and gratitude – a fitting tribute to a woman whose life continues to inspire.
