What is respite care?
Respite care is short-term care provided to older people so their regular carer can take a break. It may be planned in advance or arranged in an emergency, and can last from a few days to several weeks.
What services are included during a respite stay?
Respite clients receive the same high standard of care as our permanent residents, including:
-
24/7 support from trained staff
-
Meals and snacks
-
Personal care and medication management
-
Access to social and lifestyle activities
-
Comfortable, fully furnished accommodation
Can someone transition from respite to permanent care?
Absolutely. Many families use respite care as a way to trial residential care. If permanent placement is needed, we can guide you through the transition process.
How much does respite care cost?
The Australian Government subsidises respite care costs for eligible clients. You may be required to pay a basic daily fee. Our team will provide clear, personalised information about any out-of-pocket costs.
How long can someone stay in respite care?
The government typically subsidises up to 63 days of respite care per financial year, which can be taken in blocks or broken up into shorter stays. In some cases, extensions may be granted.
Do you have respite beds available now?
espite availability is limited at Catholic Homes, as we prioritise our permanent residential care clients. We recommend contacting us early to discuss options and be placed on a waitlist if needed.
Can I book respite care in advance?
Yes – advance bookings are encouraged, especially if you’re planning around holidays, medical appointments or carer breaks. However, availability is limited, so flexibility with dates may be required.
Who is eligible for respite care?
To access respite care in a residential aged care home, your loved one must be assessed and approved by the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). We can help you understand this process if you’re unsure where to start.
